2014 STG Marathon

Another trip to my favorite Japanese town, Ibigawa.

Adrienne has gone twice and last year I took Adam and Aaron.  This year, I'll be going with Rebecca (Adrienne's sister).  I've been excited for this because she will love it so much.  I've been thinking about how fun she will be interacting with Eddie and Yoko (our host family).

The marathon was a good one in Saint George this year.  My mum was there.  All of my family came the night before and my in-laws drove from a funeral in Twin Falls, ID late at night.  It's amazing to have such great support and is so much fun to be with everyone.

I've been recruiting former BYU cross-country runners to aim for top 10 finishes.  This year Jon Kotter, Jacob Gustaffson (Swede), and Matt Poulson all joined me.  I got them current BYU uniforms and told them they had to finish in the top 10 to be worthy of wearing the uniform.  They all did it.  We ran for 18 miles together, then Matt and eventually Swede dropped off, but nobody passed them.  I couldn't quite stay with Jon for the final 2 miles and we finished 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th.  I was 36 seconds off my best time, but that was still good since the weather was warmer and we had a bit of a headwind for a couple of sections.

The training this year was better than ever.  I was able to train with Jared Ward and Jason Witt all through the summer.  Jared ran the Twin Cities Marathon in 2:14 to take 2nd place (it was also the US Championships this year).  Jason got 22nd in the Chicago Marathon in 2:17:31.

For being the fastest runner over 40 years old, I won the trip to Japan, a treadmill, some money, chocolates, a bag, a sweatshirt, shoes, and some other things.

When I got back to the hotel, they had put this on my door.  The breakfast was great the next morning too.

While I'm gone, construction on our addition will progress.  I'm hoping my family doesn't freeze since the heater isn't hooked up yet.  Here is the current state of our new great room.
